Development Player Program

Southern Region Ringette Association High Performance/Elite Development

The Development Player Program was established to promote the development of ringette players in Southern Region who exhibit the potential to play at the elite level.

The program offers a select number of U14A/AA & U16A/AA players the opportunity to participate in training and development activities of the Southern Region AAA team over the course of the season. By offering training with the best U19 players in Southern Region, and instruction from the AAA coaching staff to augment the players’ training from their club team, Southern Region is investing in the development of the next generation of AAA players. Giving players earlier exposure to the skills, training methods, and expectations is part of ringette development in preparation for the elite level.

Development Player Selection

To be considered for selection as a Development Player (DP), a player must attend the Southern AAA tryouts. DPs must be playing with an association team in Southern Region during the AAA season.

Players not selected to the Southern AAA team have the opportunity to try out for the United AAA team. DPs will be selected from among Southern Region players who are not selected to the Southern or United teams (or who choose not to try out for United). Therefore, the players chosen to be DPs will be announced after the United AAA team is named.

Up to 6 DP positions will be offered (forwards + defence and 1 goaltender). Filling available positions is at the discretion of the AAA coaches. Not all positions may be filled.

Selection will be based on evaluation of the player in the Southern AAA evaluations, in consultation with past coaches and observation at games when possible. In addition to considering the player’s technical skills, the AAA bench staff will be looking for players whose focus, preparedness, effort and coachability are indicative of a player with the desire and potential to raise their game to the elite level.

A DP is not a substitute or alternate player. DPs are not expected to play in AAA Challenge Cups or the Ontario Winter Games, and they should not expect to be “called up” for these events. There may be opportunities to play with the AAA team in exhibition and training games.

DPs are provided the opportunity to participate in training and practice activities of the AAA team (team building sessions and some specific practices may be exempt), and it is expected that they will commit to a high level of participation, like the other members of the team. A player whose attendance and participation do not meet expectations may be asked to leave the program.

There may be a small fee ($200) to be a DP. DPs may wish to participate in the purchase of team wear, or join in team social events, for which there may be a cost.

The purpose of the program is to promote the development of players with observed potential. Selection as a DP in the current AAA cycle is not a guarantee of selection to a future AAA team or any other team.

Application to be considered for Development Player Selection

Players who will be U14A/AA & U16A/AA players during the 2018-19 season and who wish to be considered for selection as a DP if they are not selected for the Southern or United AAA team are asked to check the box on the AAA tryout registration form “I wish to be considered for selection as a Development Player”
